Michael
S. Chester, CPIM, CIRM, President, International Manufacturing Consultants, (m.chester@ieee.org),
has turned around and set up global and Chinese manufacturing operations, supply
chains, and joint ventures; developed global manufacturing strategies; sourced
products; advised merger and acquisition investors; founded startups; and
commercialized technologies.
Mike co-founded 2 startups in China, both of which received Chinese government
investment and support. He also served as VP of Business Development for a US
based startup which enabled manufacturing and engineering organizations to
collaborate on product development and speed up time to market. This company’s
manufacturing partners were located in the Far East as well.
Mike spent 16 years with IBM designing robots and automation, marketing and
selling IBM products to manufacturing companies, setting up global operations
and supply chains, and founding an IBM consulting organization for manufacturing
clients which he grew into a $20M business.
Mike lived in China from 1986-1987 while consulting to companies owned by the
Machine Building Ministry and while teaching graduate courses at Hunan
University. He has been helping companies compete in China ever since. Mike is
also a partner in an investment fund which provides early stage capital to
China-based startups.
Mike has published articles and given presentations on Supply Chain Management,
Setting up Operations in China, Global Manufacturing, and ECommerce at many
international conferences and professional society meetings including the APICS
International Conference.
Mike earned his BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Engineering from
Syracuse University and his MBA from Union College. He is Past Chair of the
Boston Entrepreneurs’ Network and has served on the boards of APICS Boston and
the IEEE (Region I), and on the planning committee of the MIT Enterprise Forum.
Mike also designed and built a robot which competed on the Robot Wars TV
program.
