The Real World of Culture Change and Supply Chain Efficiency

by Saul Pilnick and Jo Ellen Gabel

While most logistics professionals recognize the existence of corporate culture, they are blind to its inner workings and its powerful role in regulating change. This session will describe how a company's corporate culture acts as an invisible barrier to defeat supply chain innovation proving that "what you can't see can hurt you." It will detail how corporate culture is the invisible hand that guides how things are done in an organization. The presentation will show how "what we do informally" in the corporate underground is more powerful in shaping everyday behavior than "what we say formally," in the boardroom.

Dr. Pilnick will define corporate culture so that its inner workings are revealed and its vital role in implementing supply chain strategies is understood. The session will describe how successful supply chain organizations synchronize their culture and business objectives to form a more powerful organizational whole and why less effective organizations are plagued with cultural resistance that undermines needed supply chain change. Dr.Pilnick will explore various strategies and techniques for bringing about effective culture change and will outline an 8 Step Culture Change Process for measuring, diagnosing and changing an organization's corporate culture.
