Officer, Accellent Inc.
William (Bill) Howell is Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer for
Accellent Incorporated. Bill joined Accellent in 2004 as their first Chief
Bill is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of information
technology solutions and services to all of Accellent. Known for his expert
project leadership skills he has been called upon to lead many of the
corporation’s major projects including the deployment of Oracle ERP, the closure
of two factories as described in “The Right Way to Close an Operation” in the
May 2009 issue of Harvard Business Review, and the expansion of manufacturing
Prior to joining Accellent, Bill spent a decade in “big pharma” at
GlaxoSmithKline, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Eli Lilly. Bill served in a variety
of Information Technology roles including Vice President of IT Architecture and
Emerging Technologies and Vice President of Manufacturing Information Technology
and Process Automation.
Previously Bill was on the faculty of the Graduate Department of Computer
Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was
responsible for the Computer Services organization. Bill’s areas of interest and
research include project management and the management of technical staff as
well as how to best work with your manager.
Bill also worked for Digital Equipment Corporation, at the time the second
largest computer manufacturer, and Mechanical Technology Incorporated, a
manufacturer of coordinate measuring machines.
Bill has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute and an MBA from Duke University. Bill is married to Nancy and they
have a son, David, who is in fifth grade. They have a passion for boating and in
warmer weather cruise the New England coast aboard “Attitude of Gratitude.”
